One of Europe’s best-kept secrets is Bulgaria; a country that boasts of coastline along the black sea on one side, and green mountains on the other; we obviously cannot forget about the beautiful river Danube meandering its way through the country leaving behind small islands in its wake. One of the biggest Balkan countries with a rich history, a picturesque riviera, and almost 72 islands, Bulgaria is truly one of a kind.
While you cannot cover every coveted spot in this beautiful country, we saved you the hassle and curated a list of spots, foods, and activities you shouldn’t miss. Thank us later.
Sofia
If you’re going to Bulgaria, you’ve got to come to Sofia. The country’s capital lies in close contact with the popular ski mountain Vitosha. Sofia is a city close to nature and rich in history. Interestingly, it is also home to 2000 years old churches and many other historic architectures that still stand proudly. If you’re a history buff, you will want to drop by.
Plovdiv
Another treat for history lovers, Plovdiv is not just any ancient city, it is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. Besides seeing ancient ruins, one of the 7 hills around which the city is built also provides panoramic views of the Maritsa River flowing through the country. Instaworthy pictures? Check.
Nessebar
After the mountains head to Nessebar, a pretty little town sharing stunning beaches with the black sea. There are Byzantine-era fortifications and Roman bathhouses on one of the Nessebar’s islands, connected to the mainland by man-made walkways. Beach and ancient architecture all in one place – now that sure sounds interesting.
Sozopol
Sozopol is as pretty as a picture town perched out on the black sea coast, boasting some amazing beaches. In this town, you’ll come across ruins from the bronze age, there’s even an ancient fortress overlooking the sea and the historic remains of a large Christian complex. Sozopol is pretty famous for its nightlife too. If you decide to drop by, stay the night and bask in the beauty of this city.
Bulgarian Dishes To Try
Food is always the centre of any conversation or bonding (with family or strangers) while travelling – Bulgaria is famed for its array of dishes, and we’ve picked out 3 that we absolutely delight in. We’re a little partial to Banitsa if you ask us.
Bulgarian Gyuvech
When in Bulgaria, do not miss out on a traditional Bulgarian delicacy – Bulgarian Gyuvech. Full of vegetables, it looks like a casserole, but it’s the meat that makes all the difference – you can choose from either pork or beef. Served with a side of Balkan salad in a clay pot, this one’s is a must-try.
Banitsa
Banitsa is a traditional Bulgarian pastry that is crafted carefully by layering beaten eggs and a generous amount of cheese inside the filo pastry. Baked in the oven to attain the crispy texture, this one’s a keeper. In case you’re on a diet (although while vacationing, one rarely cares), may this be an exception.
Meshana Skara
One of the signature dishes of Bulgaria is Meshana Skara, a mixed grill. If you are big on meat, this is your calling card. From kebapche, kyufte, and pork steak to skewers of pork meat, it’s meat festivity.
Things To Do in Bulgaria
While there’s a lot to do in this gorgeous country, we’ve listed out the 3 things that stood out for us. There’s plenty more if you want to go exploring.
Water Sports On Sunny Beach
About 5 km from Nesebar is Sunny Beach, a beautiful coastline along the black sea. It is marvelous to look at but what’s really fun is an array of water sports that’s available here. From jet skiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, and parasailing, to banana boat rides, and speed boat rides, you will find it all here.
Skiing in Pamporovo
Pamporvo is a winter sports ski resort in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, a one-and-half-hour ride from Plovdiv. You do need to hurry back to enjoy your stay there and enjoy the incredible skiing adventure.
Trip to Rila National Park
One of the biggest national parks of Bulgaria is a 2-hour drive from Sofie. At Rila National Park you can go hiking, and enjoy some of the best views of pine forests, green meadows, and lakes. From the top of rugged cliffs, you can even catch the perfect sprawling view of the park. There’s also options for glamping so come prepared.
Truth be told, this list is too short to fit in all the things you can do and places you can go to in Bulgaria but here’s a starting point.
