‘Clean Girl’ Aesthetic: Being Effortless Is ‘Somewhat’ Exhausting.

We millennials had it easy, growing up there were not many terms. Being an “Emo Kid” is what people back in the 2000s considered cool. Fast forward to 2024, Millennial Trends are no longer “cool” and Gen Z’ers have been openly cringing at our once popular phrase (adulting). The internet subculture including social media platforms like Pinterest, TikTok, and Instagram has surged a bunch of aesthetics, primarily concerned with lifestyle, self-care, beauty, appearance, fashion, and culture.

Is it just us or is keeping up with the latest trends and aesthetic culture exhausting for you too? If by any chance you are yet to consider these very talked-about Gen Z trends, just think of yourself as that person who has their life put together. Whether we like it or not, the illusion of a perfectly organized life (real or not) is supposed to make you happy.

‘Clean Girl’ Aesthetic

The ‘Clean Girl’ aesthetic gained immense popularity on TikTok in 2022. It revolves around being a minimalist, having a clean lifestyle, being an early riser, having clear skin, flaunting your “no make-up, make-up look”, organized beauty routines, and neutral fashion. Phew.

What makes the ‘Clean Girl’ aesthetic popular?

Being minimalist in all terms say – clothing, make-up, as well as life has an elevated appeal. Thanks to Gen Z, the internet, as well as celebrities like Hailey Bieber, the ‘clean girl’ look has drawn a larger number of hashtags and people trying to look put-together without even trying (in every possible way). In terms of allure, this aesthetic is about getting your basics right – think Bella Hadid, Zendaya, Dior, and Glossier. Looking clean also gives you that expensive feel. Dressing up in minimal basics that are comfortable and sophisticated (add a bit of cream and neutral shades) works just fine for an effortless look.

Be it a Gen Z or a Millennial, everybody is drawn to these changing trends. A person’s style also embodies their lifestyle choices. Say, are you an early riser or a night owl, workout routine, how you like your coffee, your diet plan, and more.

Is the “woke-up-like-this” appeal easily achieved? Sorry to disappoint but, if you are that girl who holds a completely opposite aesthetic, it sure will take much more effort than you might have imagined. Even though it is difficult to achieve, the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic shows no signs of slowing down.

Is the trend here to stay?

A lot of people have been influenced and it’s both good and bad. One day it is beige, neutral, and arty tones, and the next thing you know, a new aesthetic is born. Looking at reels and TikTok with constant sets of rules and trying to fit in can be easily exhausting. Many will argue that following this endless sea of aesthetics and not allowing yourself to be you, is pretty silly.

Although keeping it clean and having a hint of minimalism in your lifestyle is desired by all, there is a lot of work that goes into achieving it. Putting pressure on yourself vigorously and trying to reach these “black-and-white” aesthetic expectations, is not always a good idea. Should we ditch the aesthetic game?
