Over the past few years, luxury has found a new language—one that values authenticity over ostentation. Today’s discerning travellers seek destinations with genuine stories to tell, deeply rooted identities, and the increasingly rare luxury of slowing down. It is this philosophy that defines Fattoria di Vegi, a remarkable new opening in the heart of Chianti Classico. With origins dating back more than a thousand years, this historic estate is entering an exciting new chapter, transforming itself into an international hospitality destination while remaining deeply connected to its agricultural heritage.

Fattoria di Vegi

Nestled in Castellina in Chianti, the estate offers just 23 beautifully appointed rooms, a restaurant celebrating authentic Tuscan cuisine, a working farm that remains at the heart of the property, and a breathtaking infinity pool overlooking vineyards, olive groves and woodlands that form one of Italy’s most iconic and beloved landscapes.

Far removed from the formulaic luxury resort or the spectacle that often accompanies high-profile openings, what immediately captivates visitors is not simply the estate’s privileged setting, but the remarkable character of the villa itself. In a region defined by traditional stone farmhouses and the restrained geometry of classic Tuscan architecture, Vegi stands apart as a rare gem. Its elegant white façade, stately columns and grand staircases tell a different story—one shaped by centuries of expansion, adaptation and architectural evolution. The result is an elegant residence that feels lived-in and authentic, preserving the timeless charm of a historic family home rather than the polished perfection of a purpose-built luxury hotel.

In 2023, the estate entered a new era under the stewardship of Maurits and Marlies Boomsma, a Dutch couple with a deep affection for Tuscany, who took over from the Chiostri family, custodians of the property since 1850. Rather than marking a break with the past, the transition represents a thoughtful continuation of the estate’s remarkable legacy. Silvio Chiostri, the family’s fourth-generation representative, continues to serve as a vital bridge between the property’s rich history and its future aspirations. Work on the transformation officially began in 2024 alongside long-time Tuscan friends of the new owners. Leading the project is Tommaso Marzili, Head of Development, who has overseen every stage of the restoration, carefully balancing innovation with profound respect for the estate’s extraordinary heritage. Nowhere is this vision more apparent than in the interiors. The sensitive restoration, led by architect Francesco Maestrelli in collaboration with interior designers Daniela Murri and Ilaria Becciolini, preserves the property’s historic soul while introducing a refined contemporary aesthetic. Equally influential is the creative vision of Marlies Boomsma, founder of Amsterdam’s concept store Curiosa Cabinet, whose impeccable eye for design is evident throughout the estate.

Each guest room is unique, thoughtfully curated with natural materials, carefully sourced furnishings and an understated elegance that never feels excessive. Instead of overt luxury, the spaces embody a harmonious balance between modern comfort and warm, welcoming character—a philosophy that perfectly reflects the owners’ vision of offering exceptional hospitality without unnecessary formality. Bespoke furniture, treasured objects collected over the years, organic textures and unexpected decorative details create interiors where minimalist design meets timeless sophistication. Original terracotta floors, exposed wooden beams and historic architectural features sit effortlessly alongside brass accents, glass, mirrors and contemporary artworks, resulting in spaces that feel refined without ever appearing ostentatious.

The estate’s communal spaces are equally inviting. Among its most enchanting features is the former dovecote, now transformed into a peaceful retreat for guests. Equipped with a telescope, it serves as a quiet observatory where visitors can admire the Chianti night sky, enjoy a good book or embrace a rare moment of complete tranquillity. Spanning approximately 80 hectares, Fattoria di Vegi encourages guests to experience Tuscany at an unhurried pace. Vineyard walks, cycling excursions, cooking classes, wine tastings, outdoor painting sessions in the beautifully restored lemon house—now an inspiring artist’s atelier—and leisurely afternoons beside the travertine infinity pool all form part of an experience designed not to entertain constantly, but rather to reconnect guests with the natural rhythms of the Tuscan countryside.

At the heart of the estate’s culinary offering is L’Aia del Rosso, its signature restaurant, led by chefs Matteo Gambi and Alessio Leporatti. Their menu reinterprets Tuscan tradition with fresh perspective, celebrating seasonal produce and ingredients grown directly on the estate. The undeniable centrepiece is the spectacular eight-metre-long wood-fired grill, around which the “From Garden to Grill” dining experience comes to life, showcasing premium meats alongside vegetables harvested from the estate’s own gardens. No visit would be complete without exploring the estate’s wines. From the refreshing Bacìo al Becco Rosato to the elegant Chiostri Chianti Classico, alongside prestigious labels including Il Roccolo Riserva and the Gran Selezione, each bottle reflects the character of the surrounding landscape. Particularly noteworthy is the Basilio Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, an extraordinary dessert wine that captures decades of patience, craftsmanship and tradition in every glass.

The forthcoming spa will feature a heated indoor pool, dedicated relaxation spaces and treatment rooms, broadening the property’s holistic approach to hospitality. It represents an important addition to an estate committed to offering a complete luxury experience where exceptional wine, Tuscan gastronomy, wellness and the beauty of the countryside come together seamlessly. In a region traditionally associated with spring and summer escapes, the new spa will extend the appeal of Fattoria di Vegi into every season, creating an idyllic retreat for autumn weekends and winter getaways spent among vineyards, beside crackling fireplaces and over leisurely tastings of Chianti Classico. The estate’s winery is also undergoing an ambitious transformation, with new production facilities and guest spaces set to open in the near future.

Perhaps this is what makes Fattoria di Vegi so compelling. It is a place that proudly carries a thousand years of history while continuously looking ahead—thoughtfully shaping the next chapter of its remarkable story, one season at a time.
