Sustainable Travel—These Indian Stays Are Leading the Eco-Luxury Revolution Like No Other

Today’s luxury travel is all about that sustainable life—the days of single-use plastics have turned the tide and given rise to the mindful traveller who loves to splurge but is also extremely cautious of the environment. There has been a steady growth in the number of travellers who want to travel responsibly all whilst enjoying the finer things in life and we couldn’t agree more. The Indian hospitality sector has been taking notes all along and as eco-friendly is the new flex word over the gram, these conglomerates of luxury have been working tirelessly to strike a balance between sustainability and opulence.

From upcycled flower incense sticks to zero-water certification, these properties are turning sustainability into an art form, whilst being very mindful. We’ve rolled out the carpet for 5 awesome bougie stays in India that prove you can have it all.

The Leela, Gandhinagar

The-Leela

Looking for hospitality with lots of heart and sustainability? The Leela has got it down. The brand is rooted in Indian heritage and although it screams luxury, they are just as responsible. There’s a glass bottling spot, so guests can hydrate with fresh local water and do away with single use plastic. The Leela’s sewage treatment plant proves that their water conservation is real, and not just talk. They also support local farmers, so when you dine at The Leela, it is a luxurious farm-to-table experience while cutting down on food miles. If you’re into wellness, check out Aujasya for some A1 holistic experiences that stay true to sustainability.

Let’s not forget the Leela ke Phool initiative. Teaming up with Phool.co, they’re turning used flowers into stellar incense sticks. These are hand-rolled by women from marginalized communities and packed with the hotel’s signature Tishya scent (don’t forget to pick some up while checking out). That’s empowerment while saving the planet. We absolutely recommend.

ITC Maurya, New Delhi

ITC-Maurya-New-Delhi

Welcome to ITC Maurya, where luxury and sustainability collide. Big ups to Mr. Amaan R Kidwai, Area Manager Luxury Hotels (North) and General Manager of ITC Maurya, for redefining ‘Responsible Luxury.’  The hotel recently bagged the LEED Zero Water certification, a global certification and testament to their responsible approach. This shows their serious commitment towards sustainability through smart water recycling and rainwater harvesting.  ITC Maurya also has LEED Platinum certification, a true leader in eco-friendly operations. The SunyaAqua program uses reusable glass bottles, keeping your hydration on point with zero kilometers travelled—a win in our books.

They’ve also got one of the world’s first paraboloid solar concentrators in the hospitality sector, so while you’re sipping on a fancy cocktail (or two) at the Golf Bar, stay rest assured that you’re supporting the planet as well. We highly recommend dropping by for a night or more.

Six Senses Fort, Barwara

Six-Senses

Tucked away in the Himalayas, Glenburn Tea Estate is more than just a pretty spot—it’s a model for sustainability. They’ve totally ditched single-use plastics and focus on water conservation and energy efficiency, so rest assured, your carbon footprint is taken care of. They’ve got safe garbage disposal and nature conservation efforts, making sure the gorgeous scenery stays pristine. It’s the perfect place for light-footprint tourism, so you can soak in the epic Himalayas while leaving no trace. Also, those insta-worthy shots? Yes please.

Glenburn is big on giving back to the local community through tourism. If you want to sip on some amazing tea while soaking in killer views (all while supporting great causes), Glenburn is your place to be and we do not say this lightly.

Bagh Villas

Bagh-Villas

Bagh Villas is where it’s at if you’re looking for a prim spot near Kanha National Park. Right by the Mukki gate, this place is inspired by the Maharajas’ epic hunting adventures and has a super cool Jodhpuri Shikar (hunting) vibe. The tents are set up on raised wooden platforms, all made from recycled wood, so you can enjoy that spacious yet cozy feel. Each one’s got a sweet en-suite bathroom with a bamboo shower, double vanity, and a lakeside deck for those sunset vibes. If this isn’t Pinterest goals, we don’t know what is.

Their dedication to sustainability is commendable with no single-use plastics here, plus they really care about saving water and handling waste right. They are big on energy efficiency and keeping the local ecosystem healthy. Seriously, being green never felt this good.
