After a year’s wait, it is that time of the year when poofy autumn skies make way for many a mile of ‘kash’ flowers and the faint sound of ‘dhaak‘ reverberating through the air. Yes, pujo is here and we’re all collectively losing our mind. For the uninitiated, Durga Puja honours the triumphant Goddess Durga and her unstoppable feminine power as she vanquishes the buffalo demon Mahishasura to save mankind and the gods alike. With the joyous win of good over evil, it is time to rejuvenate, unite and celebrate our cultural heritage. [PS: Durga Pujo was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible list in 2021]
From pandal hopping to eating bhog and staying awake all night, pujo evokes many sensory feelings in us and thus, we have curated a guide for you, just in time. Whether you’re a city dweller or a probashi, you may want to keep this list handy.
South Kolkata Pujo Guide
Here’s your mapped route to pandal hopping in South Kolkata. Thank us later.
We begin our pandal hopping with Badamtala Ashar Sangha.
Closest location: Kalighat Metro
Next move onto Deshapriya Park, but be warned that this pandal will be packed to the hilt so brace yourself.
Closest location: Next to Priya Cinema
Our next stop is Tridhara Sammilani, which is equally as crowded as Deshapriya Park, if not more. The crowd needs to keep moving so keep your cameras handy for insta-worthy pictures.
Closest location: Take the next lane after Priya Cinema
The next two stops are practically neighbours so it is imperative that you drop by both Ballygunge Cultural and Hindustan Park.
Closest location: Lake View Road for Ballygunge Cultural, and Hindustan Park Road for Hindustan Park.
Be sure to visit Ekdalia Evergreen, which is one of the most popular pujos in the neighbourhood and deserves a visit.
Closest location: Near Gariahat crossing
Wrap up your pujo parikrama with Singhi Park, in tow which is right in the opposite lane.
Closest location: Near Gariahat crossing, the lane opp Tridhara
Time To Refuel
Hungry after all that pandal hopping? Us too, and if you ask us, there’s no better place in the vicinity than Hyatt Centric Ballygunge Kolkata for a brilliant refuel.
