Does ‘Man in Finance’ Check All the Boxes? The Cunning Maneuvers of the Viral Trend

Man-In-Finance

Let’s face it finding the man of your dreams – loving, understanding, somewhat good-looking with a stable job in 2024 is hard. We must accept that guys like Anthony Bridgerton who would say, “You are the bane of my existence, and the object of all my desires” and have us in a chokehold only exist in a fictional world.

In search of true love, women today are swiping left, right and centre on Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble, to find a man who would tick all the boxes, be it compassionate, calm, and “treat you better” kind – even Shawn Mendes got nothing on them.

Who would check?

It’s not a surprise that 60% of Bumble users are women. The truth is on such apps, the chances of landing hookups or situation-ships are way higher than matching with a certain someone for the long haul. Done with dating apps, women now use the viral song – “Looking for a man in finance” – as their dating checklist.

Millennials are the leading generation when it comes to dating apps like Tinder. While 75% of Tinder users are Males, 24% identified as females.

More About The “Looking for a Man in Finance” Trend

“I’m looking for a man in finance, with a Trust Fund, 6’5, blue eyes” – isn’t a song to begin with. Tracing back to the origins, it was actually a fun reel posted on TikTok by a girl going by the alias ‘Girl On Couch’. Her real name is Megan Boni, a social media influencer with about 26.3 K followers on Instagram.

Megan was seen saying the lines funnily in an Alexis Rose combined with a Charlie XCX accent. She uploaded the reel in May with the caption “Did I just write the song of the summer?” as a fun post. She even asked her followers to go ahead and fit in some melody matching the lines. But Megan never thought that it would go viral and start defining boyfriend goals.

The post climbed to the limelight, got the attention of millennial and Gen-Z girls, and became an instant hit. Megan’s wish was fulfilled, and the video soon got remixed with music, and beatboxing, turning it into an absolutely catchy note.

Why Women Love the Trend?

Women saw this song as a list of all the things that they want in a guy – “finance”, “blue eyes”, “trust fund” and “6’5”. Although Mr. Darcy, the OG fits perfectly into the reel description, we all know how the ever-loving film ‘Pride & Prejudice’ romanticized the character (he was a dominant figure — yes, we said it.)

Speaking of films, ‘Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘American Psycho’, and ‘The Big Short’ were the OG banker bro movies giving us an idea about the stable and uncool life of the guys in finance. Is a fat pay cheque the only thing women need for security? Our mothers would agree, but does it work in reality?

Forget about Zendaya, Tom Holland might be an exception – they are the “IT Couple” – but, women, in general, have a weakness for tall men. Having to look up at your man’s face is something that we all desire (the blue eyes — an absolute tree topper!)

A little reality check

Although women vibed a little too hard with this song knowing that it pictured the perfect partner they desire, in real life, finding them is a literal work. In a world where “Till death do us part” kinda love is rare, friends-with-benefits arrangements are trendy and convenient, drawing a line between who’s red and green will definitely get your head spinning in no time.

A checklist with predetermined qualifications might be a clear pathway for spotting a green but the odds of finding “that man” remains slim. Modern dating is quite far from this viral “song of the summer” and this desire to have a “Man in Finance” is a mere manifestation – and, a passing fleet.
