Living with our existential crisis, thinking of the things we do, feeling frustrated by the things we couldn’t get out of our heads, and hesitating to tell others the things we think are important sometimes makes us feel like we’re the only weirdos out there. Well, it’s 2024 and things have certainly changed. Now, opening up to people and bringing out your inner weirdo slash hoe has become a trend – a kind of philosophical change that has seen a surge due to social media’s slang culture. Who knew finding that someone who matches your “freak” would be so much fun? Well, it is for people on the internet and American singer-songwriter and dancer Tinashe is to thank for this reform.
The Song
The 31-year-old artist’s latest single ‘Nasty’ has become a way of life as well as an existential question for people. From her forthcoming album ‘BB/ANG3L PT. 2 — Quantum Baby’, the track ‘Nasty’ which was released in April 2024 quickly became the song of the summer and a viral hit.
A white guy’s nerdy dance moves on the social media platform TikTok is also to thank. Going by the handle @nates.vibes , Nate is seen moving his hips, sticking out his tongue, and biting his finger (it’s definitely odd and weird to look at, but it went viral).

The TikTok video which was shared on X/ Twitter garnered over 10 million views and spurred. Tinashe herself mimicked Nate’s moves and shared it on her socials.
The song’s famous lyric/ catchphrase – “I been a nasty girl” and “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” may have a sexual hint or an open call for a romantic endeavor, but the internet is doing so much more with it.
“is somebody gonna match my freak?” could be the existential question of our time

The song has resonated far beyond what we could imagine. People on the internet are trying to find others who can match their “freak” and sharing all the ways they are a literal weirdo. From matching each other’s freak when it comes to eating dessert to going on a girl date, the song has become an immediate meme fodder.
The idea of matching someone’s “freak” has now become so widespread that it has progressed into being a weirdly personal thing – a form of expression we suppose. Although our quirks and freaky habits differentiate us from others, they also make us who we are today.
Isn’t it scary to let a person know the real you, let alone ask them to match your energy to the – T? Be it a family member, friend, or partner, showing your vulnerable self to others is easier said than done.
‘Nasty’ has undoubtedly become the song of the internet – and, a host to too many things. So what if one enjoys a long shower time, obsessing over cleaning, pouring milk before the cereal, freaking out over calorie intake, and impulse buying, there’s soo much add. People are accepting the viral trend by letting their freaky flag fly, so we were wondering; did you find someone to match your “freak”?
